Astor is extremely pale, with skin like moonlit paper and eyes that seem too large and thoughtful for his thin face. People who meet him at first think he is meek, shy, and scared, because he speaks softly and keeps his hands folded close to his chest. Astor Marqada’s life began in silence. On the night of his birth, the Weeping Comet crossed the sky, and every lamp in the Kullvug manor went out at the same time. The midwives later said they heard two heartbeats in the room after Astor’s first cry: one slow and heavy like thunder underground, and one bright and sharp like ringing crystal. These were the echoes of his demon father and godly mother, locked inside their child.
